Location

Located at the heart of the Alps, in outstanding scientific and natural surroundings, the Université Joseph Fourier in Grenoble (UFJ) is a leading University of Science, Technology and Health.

The UJF is in the heart of an area of natural beauty: a city located in a valley surrounded by 3 mountain ranges - Vercors, Chartreuse and Belledonne which offer ample opportunities for mountain sports. The on-campus facilities also give students the opportunity to take part in around thirty different physical and sports activities and the Espace Vie Etudiante (EVE) brings together the many student associations and serves as a place to meet people and to hold cultural events.

Accommodation

The City of Grenoble and its conurbation has a student population of about 60,000. So the demand for accommodation is very high. You are therefore strongly advised to begin your search well before the beginning of the university year.

There are two types of accommodation: university residences run by the public sector and other types of accommodation run by the private rental sector. If need be, you can also consider a temporary lodgings solution.

These are run by an organization known by its acronym CROUS (which stands for 'Centre Régional des OEuvres Universitaires et Scolaires'). This is the most economical form of accommodation but the limited number of places available means that not everyone can be housed this way.

All these lodgings are furnished and the monthly cost usually includes heating, lighting and water. For a self-contained 'studio flat' (what is called in French 'studio'), electricity is charged separately.

Accommodation should be provided for exchange students in a hall of residence if students apply before the deadline. University halls are situated on campus or close to specific departments but meals are not provided. However, there are student restaurants on campus (3,05 €uros/meal with a student ticket).

Types of Housing:

  • Room in a conventional university Hall : 160 to 250 Euros / month (very basic)
  • Room in a renovated university Hall : 300 to 600 Euros / month
  • Room in a private home: 300 to 500 €uros / month
  • Studio flat (one room) or small flat (one room and a kitchen) : 400 to 550 Euros/month

Students should receive an email that instructs them to complete the housing application form.

The application deadline for housing is usually

10th July for the first semester or the entire year
15th November for the second semester

Private Sector Accommodation:

Various associations and agencies classify types of accommodation on offer (apartments, furnished rooms in private homes, studio flats in private residences, or offers of joint rentals (colocations).

The national website of student accommodation LoKaviZ lists offers for apartment rentals in the private sector, joint rentals (colocations) and rooms in private houses. It might also be worth checking, for reference purposes, availability in CROUS residences: www.lokaviz.fr

The Organization Association Départementale Information Initiative Jeunesse de Grenoble (ADIIJ) publishes in their classified advertisements a list of privately placed offers of accommodation: small flat rentals, joint rentals (colocations) and rooms in private houses. www.adiij.fr

The estate (or real-estate) agencies carry lists of rental offers and are willing to help students find accommodation corresponding to their stated criteria (price, geographic location). There are many agencies in Grenoble and the surrounding area. When a student finds lodgings through an agency and signs a lease, the student has to pay the agency’s fees which are generally equivalent to one month’s rental.

Please visit www.recherche-colocation.com or www.appartager.com or www.leboncoin.fr/colocations: to make contact with others who are looking for somebody to share rented accommodation.
