5 Reasons to Consider Universite de Lausanne

  • A green and spacious lakeside setting, overlooking Lake Geneva, making it a unique place to study and live.
  • The University is situated further along the banks of Lake Geneva, from the city of Geneva itself, with the French border being only an hour away.
  • For a small city, Lausanne is packed with things to explore. A Gothic cathedral dominates the medieval centre, and a busy arts calendar upholds the cultural life of the city.
  • Explore the nearby picturesque and lakeside village Ouchy, and the close to town of Flon, an area of formerly derelict warehouses rejuvenated  as an urban centre with a cinema complex, art galleries, restaurants and bars.
  • Lausanne possess strong sporting activities, due to being the home of a multitude of sporting federations including the International Olympic Committee!

About the University

The University of Lausanne (UNIL, in French: Université de Lausanne) in Lausanne, Switzerland was founded in 1537 as a school of theology, before being made a university in 1890. Today about 13,500 students and 2,200 researchers study and work at the university. Approximately 1,500 international students attend the university (120 nationalities), which has a wide curriculum including exchange programs with world renowned universities. Together with the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) the university forms a vast campus at the shores of Lake Geneva.

Lausanne

The hilly city of Lausanne (pronounced loh-san), Switzerland’s fourth largest and the capital of the canton of Vaud, enjoys a blessed lakeside location. The medieval centre is dominated by a grand Gothic cathedral, while the rest of the city boasts unique museums devoted to interests as diverse as Art Brut and the Olympics. Throughout the year Lausanne’s citizens are treated to a busy arts calendar, alongside a plethora of activities beside (and on) the lake. Strolling the lakeshore in picturesque Ouchy (once a lakeside village in its own right, but long since enveloped by the city) is a pleasant diversion. Equally enjoyable is a meander, day or night, around Flon, an area of formerly derelict warehouses rejuvenated as a hip urban centre with a cinema complex, art galleries, boutiques, restaurants and bars. Home to two highly regarded universities and a happening design school, the Federal Tribunal (Switzerland’s highest court), the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and numerous sporting federations and multinational corporations, Lausanne is a dynamic little city punching well above its weight.
