Introduction

The Université de Rennes 1 is one of our longest-standing Erasmus partners, and offers students the chance to undertake a placement in one of three teaching hospitals associated with the Faculty of Medicine: Pontchaillou, Hôtel Dieu and Hôpital Sud.

To apply to the University you will need to complete an application form and learning agreement. You will also need to submit a transcript of your exam results, which can be obtained from the medical school examinations office. Please note that this may take a couple of weeks to process so you must ensure that you contact the exams office early. Please submit these documents to the European Studies Administrator(s) in The Medical School, who will pass your details on to the Erasmus Officer in Rennes.

About the University

The University of Rennes 1 has been in existence since 1969, but its heritage stems back to the days of the Breton university founded in 1461. In Rennes, the University is split into three major campuses with all facilities. It also has several departments outside of Rennes, in Brittany.

The University currently welcomes about 26,000 students (including about 3,400 from abroad), plus more than 2,500 in continuing education, all surrounded by 1,800 teachers and full-time researchers and about 1500 administrative and technical staff.

Rennes

Rennes is not often mentioned on tourist guides but this medium size town is well worth a visit. It has more than 200,000 inhabitants, of whom about 60,000 are students. This gives the town a vibrant nightlife. Some streets, such as the Rue Saint Michel, have only bars on both sides. (The locals actually call "Rue Saint Michel" "la rue de la soif", which means "Street of Thirst"). A stroll down Rue Saint Michel on a Friday or Saturday evening is a very interesting experience indeed. However, if you're really in the mood to "faire la fête", celebrate or just have fun in other words, the most exciting night on "Rue de la Soif" would be the "Jeudi Soir", Thursday nights, during the school year. Jeudi Soir is the night when bars are most often packed to the brim with students. The sights on Thursday nights out on the town are very memorable and interesting.

Rennes is particularly nice in early July, during the "Festival des Tombées de la Nuit". Its streets are then full of people enjoying the free street entertainment and eating or drinking at the terraces of the restaurants and cafés.

Accommodation

Students who wish to apply for a room at the student residence halls must do so via their international coordinator at the University of Rennes-1. Normally, a room request form will be sent to you by the coordinator on receipt of your university’s acceptance notification to participate in the exchange programme. Room requests should be sent to the international coordinator in early June for full year for first semester reservations, and before mid-November for second semester bookings.
