Attached to the faculties are the "Hospices civils de Lyon", 16 hospitals which contain various medical departments. This includes the Centre Hospitalier Lyon Sud, the largest teaching hospital in the Rhône-Alpes region and second largest in France.

In order to apply for a placement in Lyon you will need to complete the University's own application form, learning agreement and pre-registration form, examples of which can be found below and can also be downloaded from the University website.

About the University

The Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, also known as Université Lyon 1 or UCBL, is one of the three public universities of Lyon, France. The dominant areas of study covered by the university are science and medicine. The main administrative, teaching and research facilities are located in Villeurbanne. Other campus are the domains of Gerland, Rockefeller and Laennec. Attached to the University are the "Hospices civils de Lyon" including the "Centre hospitalier Lyon Sud", which is the largest teaching hospital in the Rhône-Alpes region and second largest in France.

The university is named after the French physiologist Claude Bernard. It is the heritage of the "faculté des sciences de Lyon", founded in 1833 and the "faculté de médecine", founded in 1874.

Out of the 2630 faculty 700 are also medical practitioners at local teaching hospitals. The university is independent since January 2009.

Lyon

Lyon is known for its historical and architectural landmarks and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was historically known as an important area for the production and weaving of silk and in modern times has developed a reputation as the capital of gastronomy in France. It has a significant role in the history of cinema due to Auguste and Louis Lumière, who invented the cinematographe in Lyon. The city is also known for its famous light festival 'Fête des Lumières' which occurs every 8 December and lasts for four days, earning Lyon the title of Capital of Lights. Legend says that the Virgin Mary saved the city from the plague and, to thank her, a statue was built. On the day it was erected, the whole city was lit by candles that its citizens had put at their windows. The local professional football team, Olympique Lyonnais, has increased Lyon's profile internationally through participation in European football championships.
