Introduction

The Universidad de Granada was founded in 1531 and its influence is felt in all walks of life around the city. In Granada, one in four inhabitants is a student. The city of Granada itself benefits from a privileged geographical location due to its proximity to the Sierra Nevada and the Mediterranean coast.

Previous Manchester students in Granada have been placed in Hospital Virgen de las Nieves e Hospital San Cecilio to do rotations in Internal Medicine, A&E, Neurology, Orthopaedics and Trauma and Infectious Diseases.

For information about the application procedure to Granada, please contact the European Studies Administrator(s).

Location

Granada

Granada is the capital city of the province of the same name, located in southeastern Spain between the shores of the Mediterranean and the Andalusian hinterland. The city is located at the foot of Sierra Nevada, the highest mountain range of the Iberian peninsula. With more than a thousand years of recorded history, Granada enjoys one of Spain's most important cultural and architectural patrimonies. Besides the Alhambra, the world renowned palaces and fortresses of the Nasrid dynasty, and the historical Moorish Albaicín quarter, both designated as World Heritage by the UNESCO, Granada boasts a Renaissance cathedral dating from the 16th century and many other architectural monuments. It is not an exaggeration to best define Granada as "University City", the city that never sleeps. The University is one of the economic engines along with tourism in Granada. Furthermore the city is one of the most chosen ones by foreign students to learn Spanish. People from Granada are outgoing and friendly.

About the University

The University is spread over 5 campuses located at Centro, Cartuja, Fuentenueva, Ayadamar and Ciencias de la Salud. The founding of the University of Granada was granted by Papal Bull, issued in 1531, establishing a Christian university to follow in the stead of the, until then, Islamic Madrassa, dating from 1349. Indeed, the site of the Arab university is now occupied by the UGR and part of the original construction can still be seen. Since then, the UGR – drawing on its historical roots – has gradually grown and developed into what it has become today: a public higher-education institution that is committed to quality and excellence in the areas of teaching, learning and research. In line with this, the university has, throughout its history, become increasingly active in the transfer of scientific, technical and artistic knowledge, social advancement, sustainable development and, above all, internationalization. Numerous national and international ranking agencies that evaluate higher education teaching and research have placed the UGR among the top universities in Spain, as well as including it within the top 3% of the best higher education institutions worldwide. Indeed, according to the Shanghai ranking, the UGR appears as one of the world’s top 500 universities.

Accommodation

The University is located in the heart of the city and so there are no important geographical differences between a university accommodation and renting privately. The university has an excellent online database to help you find whatever type of accommodation you want at http://estudiantes.ugr.es/alojamientos3/. But there are also other websites that can help you in your search.

HALLS OF RESIDENCE

The university offers numerous halls of residence (Residencias Universitarias) to students located all over the city. You can access the full list of halls and information on applying here:

The following sites are made specifically for Erasmus students, making it likely that you will end up living with other Erasmus students and not Spaniards. Students should also be wary of paying any deposits before you actually see the flat and meet the landlord as there is the possibility of it being part of a scam.
