3 Reasons to Consider Universität Heidelberg

  • Ranked by the 2016 Academic Ranking of World Universities as the best university in Germany and in the top 10 universities in Europe and 43rd in the world.
  • Despite its smaller size to other cities, Heidelberg is treated like a city twice its size. with festivals and events held throughout the year for a city of its size; visit the Summer Castle Festival, the ‘Heidelberg Spring’ (largest music festival in the entire region), the international jazz and film festivals, and of course the famous Christmas markets!
  • Heidelberg provides you with one of the most central locations in Western Europe. Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, Strasbourg and Prague can all be reached within roughly 5 hours travel time!

Location

About the University

Germany’s oldest and most famous university town is renowned for its baroque old town, lively university atmosphere, excellent pubs and evocative half-ruined castle, which draw 3.5 million visitors a year. They are following in the footsteps of the late 18th- and early 19th-century romantics, most notably the poet Goethe. Britain’s William Turner also loved Heidelberg, which inspired him to paint some of his greatest landscapes.

Heidelberg

Heidelberg’s old town has a red-roofed townscape of remarkable architectural unity. After having been all but destroyed by French troops under Louis XIV (1690s), it was built pretty much from scratch during the 18th century. Unlike the vast majority of German cities, it emerged from WWII almost unscathed. Today, Heidelberg is one of Germany’s most romantic cities. The more you wander around, the more unexpected beauty and heartstopping panoramas you will discover.

Accommodation

Heidelberg is a very attractive place to live, which means that there is a large demand for apartments and furnished rooms, especially at the beginning of each semester in March/April and September/October. Therefore, we recommend that you begin to look for accommodations ahead of time and if possible several months before coming to Heidelberg. Unfortunately, rents in Heidelberg are relatively high in comparison to other German cities.
