Lab Information

Once you have been nominated to Madrid, you should start looking for a suitable lab. To do this, you should contactprinciple investigators directly to see whether they can accept you for a lab project. You should send a short CV and information about when you wish to begin your lab placement and how long you wish to stay (minimum 9 months).  In order to find suitable PIs, you should look at the homepages of the various labs and research groups associated with life sciences here: https://www.uam.es/ss/Satellite/es/1242667526847/

Costs & Finances

Cost of Living

Information about the cost of living in Madrid can be found here: http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/city_result.jsp?country=Spain&city=Madrid

Insurance

The EHIC card: The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) will provide medical insurance for the full period of work abroad providing the student is (a) going to a European country which has a reciprocal health insurance agreement with the United Kingdom and (b) the student is NOT earning a salary whilst out on placement. In other circumstances, eligibility is dependent upon earnings and National Insurance contributions – if a student is earning a salary it may be necessary, in this instance, to take out private medical insurance to cover the length of the placement even if that placement is European based. For further information and advice please go to the Department of Health website: www.dh.gov.uk/travellers.

Immigration

If you are an international student, you will need to apply for a visa. It is your responsibility to organise a visa if you need one. Please note that visas to other countries can be very difficult to obtain in the UK for overseas students. In most cases, it is advisable to contact the Embassy in your own country for the country in which you wish to study. Normally you should arrange to have the Visa interview in your own country.

The only bodies who can give you legal advice about visas to your chosen country is the Embassy of that country and possibly the University abroad – do check their websites for Visa information as these can often be very informative and contain other useful links.
