Placements

Identifying the type of activity you wish to undertake
A Placement is defined as 'A period of time spent at another organisation/institution undertaking a specified project, or programme of work or research, limited to a distinct period of time'.

A Placement is undertaken as part of your programme, either within the original programme length or via an extension to accommodate extra time. This type of activity requires an application in My Placement.

An Overseas Institutional Visit (OIV) or Exchange is when a PGR attends at another institution overseas to carry out research work, collaboration or to undertake learning or training. If you are undertaking one of these, follow this link to make your application.

An Internship is an 'unexpected' period of work that exists outside of the programme of study and which does contribute to your research project. An internship requires and Interruption and does not require an application in My Placement.

If you are unsure whether your planned activity is a Placement, OIV or an Internship, please contact your Doctoral Academy.

If you do need to apply for an interruption, you can find information and the form for you and your supervisor to complete here

Changes to your programme - Postgraduate research handbook - The University of Manchester

Applications for any activity completed during an interruption does not need to go through the My Placement system.
